GOLF – By Webster’s definition golf is a game played with a small hard ball and various clubs on a course with 9 or 18 holes. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Anyone who has ever played a round of golf knows that the game can test your patience from time to time. But it’s well worth the effort on those magical days when the perfect swing matches a bucolic country setting, such as those found throughout Sussex County.

Did you know that . . ?

glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) In 1457 golf was banned in Scotland because it interfered with the practice of archery, which was vital to the defense effort.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) Scotland is the home of the world’s oldest golf course, St. Andrews, which was used as early as the 16th century.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) The first permanent golf club in North America, Canada’s Royal Montreal Club, was founded in 1873.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) The first 18-hole course in the US, the Chicago Golf Club, was founded near Wheaten, IL, in 1893.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) By the late 1960’s, only one player had eared more than one million dollars in this career. Arnold Palmer was the first golfer whose career earnings passed the million-dollar mark in 1968.
glfball1.gif (3507 bytes) Curtis Strange was the first million-dollar-a-year player in 1988. In 1981, Kathy Whitworth became the first woman golfer with career earnings of more than 1 million dollars.

Annual Fund-Raising Events – Good Friends Golf for Great Causes at Area Events

The Sussex County Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual golf outing which continues to be the primary fund raising events from which scholarships are awarded to area students to further their education. As a result of the first nine outings, over $55,000 in scholarships have been awarded, providing opportunities to students who might not otherwise realize their personal goals.
