This July 16th marks the eighteenth anniversary of the untimely death of singer - songwriter Harry Chapin, a performer who touched many Sussex County fans with his unique brand of storytelling put to music. On Sunday, July 25th at 7:00pm there will be a gathering at the High Point State Park Nature Center to celebrate Harrys memory. Presented by Linda & Richard Wilson and the Friends of High Point State Park, the event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
For many, Harry Chapin brings to mind his 1974 number one
hit, "Cats In the Cradle". Music fans might also recall top 40 hits such
as "W.O.L.D.", "Taxi", and "Sequel". These recordings
however do not adequately reflect Chapins profound impact on the world. At the
height of his popularity Chapin was performing an average of two hundred concerts a year,
giving away most of the proceeds to charity while simultaneously ravaging his singing
voice. Over his career Chapin donated more than $5 million to various causes, most notably
World Hunger Year which he cofounded.
Because of his many contributions, in 1987 he was posthumously awarded the Congressional
Gold Medal of Honor, an award given to only 115 Americans at the time. The first recipient
was George Washington, putting Chapin in some very good company.
The local event celebrating Chapins life is the idea
of Richard and Linda Wilson of Branchville,
dedicated fans who like many others were devastated at Harrys passing. Their goal is
not to provide a circus-like event but rather to create a forum for those interested in
sharing or hearing about reflections of how Chapin influenced people. Music, videos, and
memorabilia will be on display, and attendees are encouraged to bring any Chapin items
that they may possess. Canned food donations are also desired, benefiting Manna
House in Newton.
I for one can share a Chapin story or two, having seen him perform at places ranging from the Lenape Valley High School gym all the way to Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. I recall Harrys normal routine of finishing a show, putting his guitar down, and then walking through the audience to get to the lobby where he would sign autographs and chat with his fans. At Lenape Valley I actually patted him on the back as he walked by and told him "Good show, Harry". He certainly was a giving individual and a very talented performer.
